LAHORE, April 18 (SABAH): Unannounced and unscheduled load shedding in the country has augmented as most of the country sizzles in scorching heat.
The countrywide demand of electricity is 17000MW whereas the production capacity is 10,000MW taking the shortfall to 7000MW.
According to National Power Control Centre, the hydro power production has minimized to 2000MW.
The government power houses are producing only 4000MW while 3500MW is being attained from private power houses and 500MW from solar and other sources.
The predicted shortfall during June-July 2017 is 8000MW with the demand persisting at 22000MW. At present, the urban areas are undergoing 12 hours of power cut whereas rural areas are facing 14-16 hours of load shedding.
On the other hand, the perturbed locals have taken to the streets in Manawan area of Lahore against prolonged load shedding, saying that the urban areas are undergoing 12 hours of power cut whereas rural areas are facing 14 to18 hours of outages amid scorching heat. The protesters said that repeated requests to explain the situation were sent to areas’ water and power secretaries but no step has been taken so far.
Reacting on this intensified situation of load shedding, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed resentment and said that nation’s woes would not be tolerated. He demanded the authorities to utilize all the resources for the eradication of the energy crisis.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zaradri has announced to hold nationwide protest against the worst load shedding happening in the country. Bilawal Bhutto has said that power cuts have become unbearable for the general masses.
